Getting rid of head lice can be a royal pain. Everyone who has gone through the school system will have had to go through the process of getting checked for head lice by the school nurse or the teacher at some point and probably more than once. Considering how fast these little bugs can spread in a place like a school it is no real surprise that there is such a hard battle going on against them. Head lice are an annoyance that can become real pain if not treated early. But one of the first steps in getting rid of the pests is to control them.

Controlling a head lice infection requires that you regularly check the hair and scalp for any sign of nits or eggs. Since they are very small insects it is best to use a louse comb. A louse comb has very fine teeth and will force the nits and eggs from the hair and scalp. There are electronic louse combs that emit a beep whenever the come across a nit or an egg as well making diagnosis much easier. Another way to check for a head lice infection is to check for bite marks on the back of the neck and on the scalp. In minor cases this will show up as small red dots while in more serious cases there may be large patches of inflamed skin. Once an infection has been identified getting rid of head lice becomes the next battle.

There are no methods of getting rid of head lice that is 100% effective, at least not yet. Head lice are terribly tenacious parasites that will hold on to the very last. The best method for getting rid of them is continuous diagnosis and prevention. For a head lice infection a shampoo and conditioner that is formulated to fight head lice is often prescribed. These shampoos contain active ingredients that kill head lice and adversely affect the eggs. They also try to loosen the eggs' grip of the hairs making them easier to remove. Along with the shampoos, a fine-toothed louse comb is also used. The hair must be combed regularly to be effective. The comb removed dead lice and eggs from the hair as well as being used to ensure that there are no more lice in the hair during treatment. One of the most important aspects of treating a lice infection is consistency and repetition.
